For those who have been following the Sierra Kills story,
the results of the DNA test have apparently been leaked. Reportedly, eight independent labs have each confirmed that the DNA is non-human, but that of an "unknown primate." The results aren't official yet, but many in the cryptozoology community are quietly celebrating what may be the first scientific proof of the existence of Sasquatch.
The "Sierra Kills" story begins in October of 2010. A man named Justin Smeja and his friend were out bear hunting in the Sierras. (The location was later revealed as being near Gold Lake, CA.) Smeja says that he spotted what he thought was "a black bear standing on its hind legs and waving its arms in the air." He shot it, then spotted a second, smaller creature. He shot that one as well.
When Smeja and his friend approached the dead creatures, they discovered that they were not black bears but something that looked like "a cross between a gorilla and a bear." He became convinced that he had shot a mother Sasquatch and its child.
Smeja tried to report the incident to the authorities, but they dismissed his claim. He told the story on an online taxidermy forum that he frequents, which caught the attention of a Bigfoot expert named Derek Randles who offered to help. Randles interviewed both men, and became convinced of the veracity of their story. He encouraged the hunters to return to the scene and obtain evidence.
Randles and Smeja have remained largely quiet on the subject over the last year. Sasquatch is big business these days, and they have been closely guarding their evidence presumably in preparation for making a big announcement and book deal.
There has been a lot of skepticism regarding the Sierra Kills, and understandably so. The only physical evidence is a chunk of flesh that (reportedly) sat out in the elements for two weeks. We have nothing else to go on, not even a photograph of the bodies. A lot of people are questioning whether some DNA test results and a story could ever really constitute evidence of anything more than… well, than some DNA test results and a story.
Nevertheless, this is still preliminary leaked evidence. There may be a bigger official story waiting in the wings!
