Elephant Gores Trainer to Death

Distressed creature kills its owner on a rampage

Death is never funny or something to mock, but I can empathize with the rage of a creature who is used for entertainment and rides against its will every day. When I was a kid, my mother and I boycotted the circus that other kids attended, and while I was young I remember feeling a little jealous that they'd been able to ride an elephant and I hadn't. Now I would never attempt to do such a thing.

When an animal furiously kills its handlers like this, there's often abuse behind the scenes, but even if there's no physical abuse that can be found, we're all animals. We can all sympathize with the feeling of snapping one day under stress, and with an animal as large as an elephant, when it happens, it's not going to be good.

Do you think people should be allowed to train elephants or use them in entertainment? Why or why not?
